Ageing research centre

The major current research project is CONFABS (Concord Falls and Bone Service) study, a randomised clinical trial designed to assess the effectiveness of a specialist service providing targeted fall prevention interventions to older people. Building on existing internationally recognised and transformative research networks the Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research (CADR) is a world class research centre addressing key internationally important questions in ageing and dementia. Funded by the Medical Research Council and Versus Arthritis, we are a Centre of Excellence in Musculoskeletal Ageing Research.We are integrating and expanding complementary research and postgraduate training activity of two leading Midlands based Universities, the University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham, together with their associated NHS hospital trusts. The MRC-Arthritis Research UK Centre for Integrated Research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) was awarded to the Universities of Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield in partnership with the Medical Research Council (MRC). Versus Arthritis contributed £625,000 and the MRC £1,875,000, with extra support from the host institutes. In conjunction with the NIHR Research Design Service North East and Institute of Health and Society colleagues, the Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) at Newcastle provides a ‘one stop shop’ for investigators planning, designing, conducting and analysing trials and other high quality clinical research studies. The Interdisciplinary Dementia and Ageing Centre (IDeAC), initiated and supported by the Institute for Life Sciences at the University of Southampton, has brought together local expertise from across the research spectrum to form a dedicated interdisciplinary dementia and ageing research centre to address the problems in this complex field.
